The
National Tax Service released the 2006 Statistical Yearbook of National
Tax
on February 1, 2007. This year’s compilation of tax statistics provides
48 new items, with 61 of the existing items showing analysis of wider scope
and depth.

The
selected categories are based on a nationwide survey of the people in public
service, politics, academia, and business on what tax facts they would most
like to obtain. Figures are broken down into regions, lines of business, gender,
age groups, and income brackets to allow for cross analysis among different
types of taxes.

What
is most notable about the new edition is that it explains figures in layman’s
terms wherever possible. Its footnotes explain tax jargons, how the figures
were derived, and how certain statistics are best applied in researches for
the ordinary reader. Ambiguous words such as “number of taxpayers,” “amount,”
and “tax amount” have been replaced by more specific and easy-to-understand
ones, for instance, “number of filers,” “amount of earnings,” and “taxes
payable.”

The
Statistical Yearbook is available in both paperback and CD-ROM and provides
English translation for non-Korean speaking readers. Its digital edition will
be offered through the NTS English website in early February. Contact the NTS
for information on how to obtain a hard copy.
